eSIM won’t install? How to fix common activation errors

“Unable to activate”, “code already used”, no Add eSIM option in the menu: why an eSIM won’t install, and what to do about each of these errors.

An eSIM usually won’t install because of a weak connection during setup, rescanning a QR code that’s already been used, full profile memory, a regional version of the phone or a carrier lock. Almost all of these come down to the phone’s state during installation, not the profile itself, and most take a few minutes to fix. If the error keeps coming back, contact support and quote the message word for word.

Why won’t my eSIM install? Where it usually breaks

Most of the time, an eSIM won’t install because of the connection. Installing a profile is a short conversation between your phone and a server: the phone reads the code, contacts the server, downloads the profile and writes it to a secure chip. Things can go wrong at any of these steps, but it’s usually the connection that drops.

When an install fails, the first thing to check isn’t the Wi-Fi icon but whether any page actually loads in your browser. Weak hotel or airport Wi-Fi is a classic cause of a stuck installation: the code was read, but the profile never downloaded. Mobile data from your home carrier is often more reliable than public Wi-Fi for this.

The second most common scenario is trying to install the profile on the road. At the airport the network is overloaded, on the plane there’s none, and in a foreign country you don’t have data yet, which is exactly what you need to install the eSIM. It’s a catch-22 that’s easy to avoid: install the eSIM at home, on stable Wi-Fi.

“Unable to activate eSIM” and other error messages explained

The exact wording varies between software versions, but the meaning boils down to a few situations. Read the whole error message: it almost always hints at where the process broke off, whether reading the code, reaching the server or writing the profile to memory.

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
“Unable to activate eSIM”The phone couldn’t reach the profile serverCheck your internet connection and try again in a minute
“Code already used”The profile from this code is already installedFind the line in your list of plans; the code won’t work again
“Invalid QR code”The code wasn’t read fully or was damaged in printingScan it from a screen rather than paper, or enter the details manually
“Unable to add cellular plan”The phone’s profile memory is fullDelete an old profile you no longer need or contact support
“eSIM not supported”The phone is carrier-locked or a regional versionCheck compatibility in the bot; only the carrier can unlock it

If there’s no message at all and the installation just hangs on “Activating”, it’s almost certainly the connection. Cancel it, switch to another network and start over.

What to do if the eSIM installation was interrupted

If the installation was interrupted, open your list of plans first: the profile may have installed without a notification. Then work through the steps top to bottom and check the list after each one, because sometimes the profile shows up with a delay.

  1. Open the list of plans in your cellular settings: the profile may have installed without a notification.
  2. If it’s not there, check your internet connection by opening any page in the browser.
  3. Switch to another network: home Wi-Fi is more reliable than hotel Wi-Fi, and your home carrier’s mobile data works too.
  4. Restart the phone and try the installation again the same way as the first time.
  5. Free up space: if there are already several profiles stored, delete the ones you definitely don’t use.
  6. Update your phone’s software if you haven’t in a while; eSIM support is more stable in recent versions.
  7. Still no luck? Contact support and quote the error message word for word; it saves a lot of back-and-forth.

Why does it say the QR code has already been used?

“Code already used” means the profile from this QR code is already installed: the code is single-use and expires after the first successful installation. People usually see it after a first attempt that only looked like it failed, when they scan the same code again. That’s actually good news: the profile is on your phone, and you just need to find it in the list of lines and turn it on.

Don’t install the profile on a phone you won’t be traveling with, either: you won’t be able to move it later. If you’re buying an eSIM for family members, the person who is traveling should install it on their own phone.

Can’t add an eSIM on iPhone or Android?

An eSIM usually won’t add on iPhone because the phone doesn’t support it or the install drops on a weak connection. There’s one path: Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Data), then Add eSIM, then scan the code. If the option isn’t there at all, the phone either doesn’t support eSIM or is a regional version without it, as happens with some devices made for mainland China.

On Android, where you add an eSIM depends on the manufacturer’s skin: the option is called Add eSIM, Download a SIM or Add mobile plan, and it lives under Connections, SIM manager or Network & internet. Can’t find it? Search for “eSIM” in the built-in Settings search. On a modern phone, a missing option usually means exactly that: a regional version.

Which problems won’t a reinstall fix?

Full profile memory, outdated software, a carrier lock and a regional version of the phone won’t go away no matter how many times you scan the code: each one needs its own fix.

The built-in compatibility check in the bot @moresim_bot helps tell these cases apart: it tells you right away whether your model supports eSIM at all. If the model supports it but installation still fails, the cause lies with that particular phone, and it’s best to sort it out with support.

What to do before you buy so the eSIM installs the first time

Most eSIM install errors can be avoided in advance. Check your model in the bot, install the profile at home on stable Wi-Fi rather than at the airport, and make sure the line shows up in the list and can be turned on. This won’t eat into your plan: it starts counting on your first connection to a network in your destination.

It also helps to find where your phone keeps the Add eSIM option and what the list of plans looks like before you travel. At home it takes a minute; at the airport it saves a lot of stress. If you can’t find the option at all, contact support before you buy, and they’ll advise on your specific model and software version.

People often forget that the eSIM installs as a second line. Your home number and physical SIM stay in the phone, and there’s nothing to remove; you only switch which line handles data.

FAQ

What does “Unable to activate eSIM” mean and how do I fix it?

Most often it means your phone couldn’t reach the profile server. Check that any web page loads in your browser, switch to a more stable network and try the installation again in a minute. If the message keeps coming back, restart the phone, then contact support and quote the error message word for word.

Why won’t my eSIM install on iPhone?

First, check whether Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Data), has an Add eSIM option. If it doesn’t, the iPhone either doesn’t support eSIM or is a regional version with eSIM disabled. If the option is there but installation fails, the cause is usually a weak internet connection or a full profile memory.

What does “This code is no longer valid” or “QR code already used” mean?

The profile from this code is already installed: an eSIM QR code is single-use and expires after the first successful installation. That’s actually good news, so find the line in your list of plans and turn it on. The same code won’t work a second time, and it’s best not to delete the installed profile to set it up again: the same code usually won’t reinstall it.

Why can’t I add an eSIM on my Android phone?

The menu item has different names on different Android skins: Add eSIM, Download a SIM or Add mobile plan, and it lives under Connections, SIM manager or Network & internet. Search for “eSIM” in the built-in Settings search. If there’s no such option at all, you most likely have a regional version of the phone without eSIM support.

Can I install one eSIM QR code on two phones?

No: an eSIM QR code is single-use, and the profile installs on one phone only, whichever scans it first. That’s why the person who is traveling should install the eSIM on their own phone straight away, not test it on someone else’s. If the code has already gone to the wrong phone, don’t delete the line; contact support first.
