eSIM has signal but no internet: what to check, step by step

You have bars and a network name, but nothing loads: why an eSIM has no internet and what to check, from the data line and data roaming to network mode.

If your eSIM has no internet even though you see signal bars and a local network name, it’s almost always a settings issue, not the profile: the wrong line is set for mobile data, data roaming is off on the eSIM, or a VPN, a data limit or manual network selection is in the way. Less often, the plan’s data or validity has run out. Work through the checks in order, changing one setting at a time.

Why does my eSIM have signal but no internet?

Being connected to a network and passing mobile data are two different things. Being connected means your phone has registered with a local network: it picks up the signal, shows bars and sometimes even takes calls. Passing data needs separate permission: the phone has to know that this particular line handles data and that it’s allowed to work on a foreign network.

That explains nearly every “signal but no internet” case. Either the wrong line is set for data, or data roaming is off, or a setting left over from a previous trip is getting in the way. Less often, the phone has automatically latched onto a weak partner network and won’t let go.

Another possibility is the plan itself. If you’ve used up your data or the plan has expired, the signal stays but data stops flowing. Check your remaining data in your account on the website or in the app of the bot @moresim_bot, and top up there too with “Top up data” on the eSIM card, if top-ups are available for that plan.

What to check when your eSIM has no internet

Check your eSIM settings in order, one at a time: after each toggle, give the phone about twenty seconds, because switching networks isn’t instant.

  1. Open your cellular settings and see which line is set for mobile data. It should be your MoreSim eSIM, not your home number.
  2. Go into the eSIM profile and turn on data roaming: most travel eSIMs run on the local network as roaming, and without it you won’t get data. If your plan’s instructions say otherwise, follow them.
  3. Turn off mobile data on your home SIM so your data doesn’t go through your home carrier.
  4. Turn off any VPN. A server from a previous trip may be unreachable from here, and all your traffic will get stuck on it.
  5. Check whether a data limit is set: many phones quietly turn off mobile data once the limit is hit.
  6. Switch the network mode to automatic or to 4G/3G if it was set to 5G only. In some countries 5G isn’t available everywhere.
  7. Toggle airplane mode on and off, then restart the phone.
  8. If that doesn’t help, open network selection, turn off automatic mode and pick a different network from the list manually.

Symptom, likely cause and fix

Your screen points to the cause: bars with no data, a network icon without 4G and data that suddenly stopped each point to a different setting.

If none of these rows fit and there’s still no internet, go to the section on VPN and data limits below: that’s where the sneakiest causes hide.

How to turn on data roaming for an eSIM

The data roaming toggle lives inside the specific line, not in general settings. On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions), choose the eSIM plan and turn on Data Roaming. On Android the path depends on the manufacturer’s skin: Connections or Network & internet, then SIM cards or SIMs, pick the profile and turn on roaming. Menu names differ between versions, so searching settings for “roaming” is often faster.

A common mistake is turning on roaming for your home SIM instead of the eSIM: the phone then uses your home carrier’s roaming and your travel plan sits untouched. Turn off mobile data on your home SIM so your data doesn’t go through your home carrier. Keep the line itself on if you’re expecting bank texts; that requires roaming to be available with your carrier.

How to select a network manually

When the phone latches onto a weak partner network, picking one manually helps. Open Network Selection or Network operators in the eSIM line’s settings, turn off automatic mode and wait for the list, which can take up to a minute. Choose a network with a recognizable local name. If it doesn’t connect, go back to the list and try the next one.

Not every network on the list is available to your plan: a travel eSIM works through partner networks, and the profile simply won’t connect to some carriers. That’s not a fault, just how roaming agreements work. If no network gives you data, switch back to automatic and work through the other checks.

VPN, DNS and data limits left over from a previous trip

The sneakiest causes are settings you turned on once and forgot about: a VPN with a server in a country you no longer visit, a manually set private DNS, a data limit from last month. They all look the same: signal, but no data.

It’s easiest to check them one at a time: turn one off, try loading a page. That way you’ll know exactly what was blocking you, and you won’t have to guess on your next trip.

Websites load, but one app doesn’t work

It’s a different story when the browser loads pages but a specific app (a bank, a taxi app, an online store) keeps throwing an error. Usually the plan and settings have nothing to do with it. Some services restrict access by country: they see a foreign IP address and refuse to work. Sometimes it’s the other way round, and the app needs your home number for a text confirmation while data runs through the eSIM.

The check is simple: if other apps and websites open, your internet is fine and the issue is with that service. We cover how to receive texts on your home number without using data in a separate article in the journal.

If you’ve been through the whole list and still have no internet, contact MoreSim support: via /support in the bot @moresim_bot, a ticket in your account or email at admin@moresim.online. Describe what your screen shows: the network name, the signal icon and which line is set for data.

FAQ

My eSIM has no signal abroad. What should I do?

First, toggle airplane mode on and off so the phone rescans the available networks. If no bars appear, get out into the open: underpasses, elevators and thick-walled buildings often block the signal. If that doesn’t help, open network selection, turn off automatic mode and try picking a network from the list manually.

Why is my eSIM connected but the internet isn’t working?

Connecting to a network and using mobile data are set up separately. Check that the eSIM is the line selected for mobile data, that data roaming is on inside the eSIM profile, and that mobile data is off on your home SIM. If all of that is right and there’s still no internet, check your remaining data and plan validity, then look at VPN and data limits in settings.

How do I turn on data roaming for an eSIM?

The toggle sits inside the specific line, not in general settings. On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data), choose the eSIM plan and turn on Data Roaming. On Android the path depends on the manufacturer: Connections or Network & internet, then SIM cards or SIMs, pick the profile and turn on roaming. If you can’t find it, search settings for “roaming”.

How do I select a network manually on my phone?

Open Network Selection or Network operators in the eSIM line’s settings and turn off automatic mode. Scanning for the list can take up to a minute. Pick a network with a local name; if it doesn’t connect, go back to the list and try the next one. Once the problem is fixed, switch back to automatic.

Why does my eSIM internet fail in just one app?

If your browser and other apps work, the eSIM isn’t the problem. Some services restrict access by country and refuse to work from a foreign IP address, and some need your home number for a text confirmation. It’s easy to check: open any website, and if it loads, your data is fine and the issue is with that service.
