Zanzibar and Tanzania eSIM: internet on the beach and on safari
Mobile data in Zanzibar for travelers: coverage in Stone Town, Nungwi and Paje, what to expect on safari in the Serengeti and on Kilimanjaro, and when to install your eSIM.
Plan for your trip: Tanzania · Data for your trip — See plans →
Mobile data in Zanzibar usually works in Stone Town and in the beach villages of Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi, and on mainland Tanzania in Arusha, Moshi and Dar es Salaam. On safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, or climbing Kilimanjaro, you’ll only get signal in places. The easiest way to get connected is a Tanzania travel eSIM installed at home: Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so your data works the moment you land.
What is mobile internet like in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is a small island, and the mobile network covers its main tourist spots. In Stone Town, mobile data usually works in the narrow lanes of the old town and on the waterfront by Forodhani Gardens. On the north coast in Nungwi and Kendwa, and on the east coast in Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi, you’ll usually have signal in the villages and on the beaches in front of the hotels too.
Coverage in Zanzibar gets weaker at remote hotels on the island’s southern tip, in Jozani Forest (home of the red colobus monkeys) and out at sea: snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll, on the Nakupenda sandbank, or on a dhow trip to the islands. Low tide in Paje and Jambiani, when the water retreats far from shore, doesn’t change your signal, but beyond the reef it may be gone.
| Where | Coverage | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Town | Usually solid | An offline map of the old town, a lifesaver in the maze of lanes |
| Nungwi, Kendwa | Usually available in the villages and on the beaches | Hotel Wi-Fi for big downloads |
| Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi | Usually available, weaker at remote villas | Ask about Wi-Fi when you book |
| Mnemba, Nakupenda, dhow trips | Signal weakens or drops at sea | Screenshot your voucher and meeting time |
| Jozani Forest, spice farms | Patchy | Your guide’s contact saved offline |
Treat this as a rough guide, not a promise. Quality depends on the carrier, the location and the time of day: in the evening, the network in a busy beach village can slow down. That applies equally to a local SIM and an eSIM.
Do phones work on safari in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire?
A Tanzanian safari usually starts in Arusha, and there’s mobile data there. Once the jeeps head into the national parks, coverage turns patchy. On the road to Ngorongoro and at the crater rim you’ll often have signal; down inside the crater it’s weaker. In the Serengeti, signal shows up near lodges, at the park gates and at a few points in the central area, while most of the park has none.
Many safari lodges and tented camps offer Wi-Fi, sometimes only in the common area and at set hours. That’s enough for messaging, but usually not for video. Tarangire and Lake Manyara are closer to Arusha and the main roads, so coverage there is usually a bit better, but don’t count on it all day.
Can you get internet while climbing Kilimanjaro?
On Kilimanjaro, there’s mobile data in Moshi and at the park gates, but only in places along the climbing routes. At some camps and on open stretches of the slope you’ll catch a signal; in the forest and in valleys it disappears. The exact picture depends on the route, the weather and the carrier, and guides usually know where on their route you can send a message home.
The real limit on Kilimanjaro isn’t the network, it’s your battery. Cold drains it fast, there are no power outlets at the camps, and you’ll want to save your phone for photos and emergencies. Keep it in airplane mode until you need data, and bring a power bank, kept warm inside your jacket.
Tanzania SIM card or eSIM: which is easier for travelers?
A local SIM card in Tanzania and Zanzibar is sold at the stores of the big carriers, including Vodacom and Airtel, and by agents in towns. Registration requires your passport and biometric registration, usually a fingerprint scan. It takes time, and at the airport after an overnight flight it means another queue. Check the current registration rules before your trip.
A travel eSIM skips registration on arrival. MoreSim sells eSIMs on its website and in the Telegram bot @moresim_bot, and you can pay with Telegram Stars from any country, right in the bot (bank card and SBP payments currently work with cards issued in Russia). The QR code arrives in the chat in about 30 seconds. The profile installs as a second line, and your home SIM stays in the phone. MoreSim plans are mobile data only, with no phone number: you call through messaging apps, bank texts arrive on your home SIM, and the data and validity options for Tanzania are on its country page.
| Travel eSIM | Local SIM | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | Online, at home | At a store, with your passport |
| Registration | Not needed when you buy online | Biometric, check the current rules |
| When it works | Right after landing | After registration |
| Home SIM | Stays in the phone | Needs a second slot |
When to install an eSIM when flying to Zanzibar with a layover
Flights to Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro International Airport often route through a hub in the Middle East or Africa. Install your Tanzania eSIM at home over Wi-Fi: a MoreSim plan starts counting on first connection in the destination country, not when you install it and not during the layover. If you do a safari first and then the beach, the domestic flight from the mainland to the island stays within Tanzania, so the same plan covers both.
- At home, check that your phone supports eSIM; the bot has an automatic compatibility check.
- Buy a plan for Tanzania and install the profile by scanning the QR code.
- Until you land, keep mobile data off on the Tanzania line.
- During the layover, use the airport Wi-Fi or a separate plan for the transit country.
- After landing, turn off airplane mode, pick the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it: a travel eSIM runs on the local network as a roaming line, so without it you won’t get data.
- Turn off mobile data on your home SIM, but leave the line itself on if you’re expecting bank texts; that only works if roaming is available on it.
- If your safari crosses into Kenya, for example to the Maasai Mara, get a separate plan for Kenya: as of October 2026, the MoreSim catalog has no regional plan for African countries.
How much data do you need in Zanzibar and on safari?
On a beach holiday in Zanzibar, your data goes on messaging, maps and social media, which doesn’t use much. On safari you’ll usually use even less, since there’s often no signal, but the catch is this: in the evening at the lodge, your phone may upload hundreds of wildlife photos in one go if cloud backup is on. Set cloud backup to Wi-Fi only.
- Turn off photo and video uploads to the cloud over mobile data.
- Download offline maps of Zanzibar and your safari area.
- Check your remaining data in the bot or in your account on the website.
- Running low? Top up your plan without a new eSIM: use “Top up data” on the eSIM card in your account or in the bot’s app, if top-ups are available for that plan.
For an estimate tailored to your trip, see our guide on how much data you need for travel. MoreSim support is reachable via /support in the bot, a ticket in your account and email.
FAQ
Is there mobile internet in Zanzibar?
Yes. Mobile data usually works in Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Jambiani. Coverage gets weaker at remote hotels, in Jozani Forest and out at sea on boat trips. Actual quality depends on the carrier and the spot.
Does a Tanzania eSIM work in Zanzibar?
Yes. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so travelers use a Tanzania travel eSIM on the island. Your phone needs to support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked. Check the terms of a specific plan on the Tanzania catalog page.
Is there cell service on safari in the Serengeti?
In the Serengeti there’s mobile data only in patches: near lodges, at the park gates and at a few points in the central area. Most of the park has no signal at all. Many lodges and tented camps offer Wi-Fi in the common area, often only at set hours.
Is there internet on Kilimanjaro?
On Kilimanjaro there’s coverage in Moshi and at the park gates, but on the climbing routes only at some camps and on open stretches of the slope. The bigger problem on the mountain is battery life in the cold, so keep the phone in airplane mode until you need it and bring a power bank.
How can a tourist buy a SIM card in Tanzania?
A Tanzanian SIM card is sold at carrier stores and by agents in towns. You’ll need your passport and biometric registration, usually a fingerprint scan, which takes time; check the current rules before your trip. The alternative is a travel eSIM you install at home.
When should I install my eSIM if I’m flying to Zanzibar with a layover?
Install your Tanzania eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you fly. A MoreSim plan starts counting on first connection in Tanzania, not when you install it and not during the layover. Use the transit airport’s Wi-Fi, and after landing in Zanzibar set the eSIM as your data line.
