eSIM payment failed? Common causes and what to do, step by step

Card declined, no confirmation code, or you were charged but the QR code never came: why an eSIM payment fails, what you can check yourself and what to send to support.

An eSIM payment usually fails at the confirmation step: your bank declined it under its own rules, the text message code never reached your home number, or your connection dropped while the payment was being confirmed. Start with your banking app, which shows whether the transaction was declined, put on hold or completed. If you were charged but there’s no QR code, don’t pay again: check the bot chat and your account, then contact support.

Why does an eSIM payment fail? The usual causes

Failed eSIM payments usually come down to one of five scenarios. The bank declined the transaction under its own rules. The confirmation code never arrived. A card limit kicked in. The connection dropped just as the payment was being confirmed. Or the money was put on hold but the order was never created.

There’s also the case where the payment went through but you can’t see your eSIM. Most often the profile is there: the QR code went to your chat with the bot or to your account on the website, and you’re looking for it somewhere else. So check both places first instead of paying again.

On a bank statement, it’s important to tell two transaction states apart. A “hold” (or pending authorization) means the bank has frozen the funds until the transaction is confirmed, and it’s released automatically if the payment isn’t completed. “Completed” (or posted) means the transaction went all the way through. On a statement the two look almost identical, and that’s where most of the panic comes from.

What happened, what it means and what to do

The symptom of a failed payment usually tells you where to look for the cause and what to do first.

What happenedWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Bank declined the paymentThe bank’s rules or the card’s online payment settings kicked inFind the decline notice in your banking app, enable online payments if needed and try again
No confirmation codeThe code was texted to a number you can’t access right nowSwitch to confirming in your banking app or choose another payment method
Payment cut off at the last stepYour connection dropped during confirmationWait for the system to respond, check the chat and your account, and only then try again
Charged, but no QR codeThe order may have been created but the message didn’t arriveCheck the bot chat, your account and email, then contact support
Two similar transactions on your statementOne of them may be a hold rather than a completed paymentDon’t pay again, note the time of both and contact support

The table helps you get your bearings, but it isn’t a diagnosis: the same symptom can have different causes. So the sections below go through them in order, from the most common to the rarest.

What to do when your bank declines the payment

If your bank declines an eSIM payment, look for the reason in your banking app: the seller can’t see it, because all that arrives is a flat “transaction declined.” A decline from your bank is the most common scenario and, luckily, the easiest to understand: the app usually shows a notification explaining it.

Typical reasons for a bank decline: online payments are disabled on the card, you’ve hit your daily online spending limit, the card has expired, or the bank flagged the payment as suspicious because you’re paying from another country. That last one comes up a lot while traveling. If your app has a “This was me” button or lets you confirm the payment by phone, that’s the fastest way to lift the block.

Not getting the payment confirmation code?

The payment confirmation code usually doesn’t arrive because your bank texts it to the number linked to your card, which is your home number. If the SIM is at home, the number is switched off or roaming isn’t available on it, the code won’t reach you and the payment will hang until the confirmation window runs out. On a trip, this is the most common scenario.

The fix is to switch confirmations to your banking app: push notifications usually arrive over the internet, such as hotel Wi-Fi, and don’t depend on your home number. If your banking app isn’t available, use a method that doesn’t depend on bank codes: Telegram Stars are spent inside the messenger, as long as you already have Stars or can buy them the usual way. Paying via SBP, which currently works with cards issued in Russia, also needs a working banking app, so make sure you can log in before you fly.

Charged but no eSIM? Here’s what to do

If you were charged but have no eSIM, the first rule is: don’t pay a second time. Paying again almost always creates another transaction that will have to be sorted out later, and your original order may already be through.

Check in turn: your chat with the bot @moresim_bot, where the QR code arrives in about 30 seconds; your account on the website, if you bought there; and your email spam folder. Then check the transaction status in your banking app: “hold”, “pending” or “processing” means the money hasn’t left for good, and if the payment isn’t completed, the bank releases that hold itself.

If the QR code isn’t anywhere and the bank shows a completed transaction, that’s a case for support. You can’t fix it yourself: only someone who can see both sides can match the payment to the order.

Step by step: what to do if your payment didn’t go through

If your eSIM payment didn’t go through, take it in order: first see what your bank shows, then check your connection and the places the QR code goes to, and only then pay again or use another method.

  1. Don’t retry the payment right away: let the system respond and see what your bank shows.
  2. Open your banking app and find the transaction: declined, on hold or completed.
  3. If the bank declined it, check the card’s online payment settings and limits.
  4. If the code didn’t arrive, switch to confirming in your banking app or use another payment method.
  5. Check your connection: payments fail most often on weak Wi-Fi. Move closer to the router or switch networks.
  6. Look in the bot chat, your account and your email: the order may exist even though the message didn’t arrive.
  7. Try another payment method: card, SBP and Telegram Stars are independent of each other (card and SBP payments currently work with cards issued in Russia, Stars from any country).
  8. If nothing helps, contact support with the transaction details.

What to include when you contact support

When you contact support, bring the time of the transaction, the payment method, your account details and what your bank shows: that’s enough to match your payment to an order. The more precise your message, the fewer follow-up questions and the faster the answer.

On refunds, briefly and honestly: ask support about refund terms. They’ll look at your specific transaction and tell you what can be done. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here, and we won’t pretend there is.

One last thing: if you need the eSIM right now and the payment is stuck, the fastest route is to try another payment method and contact support about the first transaction in parallel. That way you’re not left without data while the stuck payment gets sorted out. Payment methods and their quirks are covered in our article on paying for an eSIM from Russia.

FAQ

Why does my eSIM payment fail?

Most often an eSIM payment fails because of your bank’s rules, a card limit, a confirmation code texted to a home number you can’t reach, or a connection drop at the moment of confirmation. The reason for a decline usually shows up in your banking app. If the bank shows nothing, try another payment method and contact support.

I paid for an eSIM but didn’t get the QR code. What should I do?

First check every channel: your chat with the bot @moresim_bot, where the QR code arrives in about 30 seconds, your account on the website and your email spam folder. Then check the transaction status in your banking app: a hold is released automatically if the payment didn’t go through. If the QR code isn’t anywhere, contact support with the time of the transaction and the payment method.

My bank declined the payment. What should I do?

If your bank declines an eSIM payment, the seller can’t see why: all it receives is a “declined” message. The reason is almost always visible to you in your banking app, though. Typical causes are online payments being disabled on the card, a daily online spending limit being reached, an expired card, or the bank flagging the payment as suspicious because you’re paying from another country.

Why am I not getting the payment confirmation code?

A payment confirmation code usually doesn’t arrive because your bank texts it to your home number, and it’s unavailable while you travel: the SIM is at home, the number is switched off, or roaming isn’t available on it. The fix is to switch confirmations to push notifications in your banking app, or choose a payment method that doesn’t rely on bank codes.

I was charged but didn’t get my eSIM. What now?

Don’t pay a second time. Check your chat with the bot, your account on the website and your email: the order may have gone through while the message didn’t. Check with your bank whether it’s a hold or a completed transaction. If the profile isn’t anywhere, contact support with the payment details, and ask them about refund terms.

Can I pay another way if my card doesn’t work?

Yes. Telegram Stars work from any country, right in the bot, while card and SBP payments currently work with cards issued in Russia; the methods are independent of each other, so a failure with one doesn’t block the others. If your card runs into bank limits or rules, try another method, and contact support about the stuck transaction in parallel.
