Roaming in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man on a UK phone
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man aren’t the UK for roaming. What EE, Vodafone, O2, Three, giffgaff and SMARTY do there, plus ferries and eSIMs.

Roaming in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man is not the same as using your phone at home: the islands are Crown Dependencies, outside both the UK and the EU, so a UK SIM roams there on local networks and each UK network sets its own terms. As of October 2026, EE counts all three islands as part of its Europe zone, with the same daily fee as in France or Spain on plans launched from July 7, 2021. O2 includes them at no extra cost, while giffgaff and SMARTY leave them out of their EU roaming altogether.
Which UK networks charge for roaming in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man?
Most big UK networks put the islands in their Europe roaming zone, so you pay whatever your plan pays in the EU. Two things catch people out: Vodafone and Three treat the Isle of Man almost like home, and the MVNOs giffgaff and SMARTY exclude all three islands from EU roaming. Here is how each network describes it on its own pages, checked on October 1, 2026.
| Network | Jersey and Guernsey | Isle of Man |
|---|---|---|
| EE | Europe zone: daily EU charge on plans launched from July 7, 2021, or a multi-day EU pass; older plans at no extra cost | Same as Jersey and Guernsey |
| Vodafone, pay monthly | Zone B: daily charge on plans bought since August 11, 2021, unless the plan includes Euro Roam | Zone A: included in all pay monthly plans |
| Three | Go Roam in Europe: daily charge on pay monthly plans started from October 1, 2021, unless roaming is built in | No charge to unlock your UK allowances |
| O2 | Europe Zone at no extra cost, within a 25GB roaming limit | Same as Jersey and Guernsey |
| giffgaff | Not in EU roaming: charged from credit at UK non-EU rates | Same as Jersey and Guernsey |
| SMARTY | Not on its EU list: needs “Out of plan” add-ons | Same as Jersey and Guernsey |
The fees depend on when you joined and can change every spring, so check your own plan in your network’s app. EE’s price guide, applicable from September 3, 2026, adds that its EU daily charge covers a UK day, midnight to midnight UK time. Daily fees in Spain, France and the rest of Europe are in our guide to EU roaming charges for UK phones.
Why aren’t the islands treated like the UK or the EU?
Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are Crown Dependencies: they are not part of the United Kingdom, were never EU members, and have their own regulators and mobile networks. To a UK network, a phone in St Helier or Douglas is abroad and roaming on a local partner network, even though island numbers look like UK ones.
EU visitors are in the same position. The European Commission’s roaming page, last updated July 13, 2026, applies “roam like at home” in the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova; the UK is excluded, and the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not on the list. A French or German SIM therefore works in Jersey on its carrier’s own terms, so check the zone list before you board in Saint-Malo.
Jersey lies close to the Normandy coast, and a phone can latch onto a network from across the water. If your plan treats France and Jersey differently, choose the network manually.
Which local networks will your phone use on the islands?
In Jersey and Guernsey the mobile networks belong to JT and Sure; on the Isle of Man they are Manx Telecom and Sure. Airtel-Vodafone, once the third Channel Islands network, now belongs to Sure, which says all Airtel accounts in Jersey have moved to its systems. A travel eSIM connects to one of the island networks as a roaming partner, and which one depends on the plan.
Sure says it is upgrading its Jersey network in phases from July 2026, parish by parish, with possible short disruptions, and is switching off 3G there. If the signal drops, toggle airplane mode or pick another network manually.
Will my phone work on the ferry to Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man?
Near the coasts it usually does; mid-crossing it may not. As of October 2026, DFDS sails to Jersey and Condor Ferries to Guernsey from Portsmouth, Poole and Saint-Malo, and the Isle of Man Steam Packet lists routes from Heysham, Liverpool, Larne and Dublin. Close to shore your phone holds land networks; further out it may find only the ship’s own mobile network, if the vessel has one.
Ship networks are maritime roaming, billed outside ordinary roaming. EE sells a separate Maritime (Ships & Ferries) pass, SMARTY says maritime usage isn’t included in plan or roaming allowances, and Three lists maritime networks among destinations outside Go Roam. The European Commission says “roam like at home” doesn’t cover networks on board boats either, and a travel eSIM doesn’t work on them, as our cruise guide explains.
Europe plan or island plan: which eSIM fits the trip?
As of October 2026, the MoreSim Europe regional plan lists Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man among its 47 countries, together with the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. One Europe plan suits island hopping or a trip that starts in England or Saint-Malo, and each island also has its own country plan in the catalog for a stay on one island. Country lists change, so check the islands in the plan details on the website or in @moresim_bot before you buy.
A MoreSim eSIM works as a second line, so your home SIM stays in the phone. The QR code arrives in the chat in about 30 seconds, and the plan starts counting on first connection in the destination, so you can install it at home. MoreSim plans are data-only, with no phone number: you call over messaging apps, and bank texts keep arriving on your home SIM. You can pay with Telegram Stars from any country, right in the bot; bank card and SBP payments currently work with cards issued in Russia.
If you run low, tap “Top up data” on the eSIM card in your account or in the bot’s app, if the plan allows top-ups. Top-ups are paid by bank card or SBP, which currently work with cards issued in Russia, not with Stars, so if you pay with Stars, size the plan for the whole trip. Our guide to one eSIM for all of Europe explains regional plans, our UK eSIM guide covers the mainland leg, and our data guide helps you size the trip.
Is there signal on Sark, Alderney and Herm?
Yes, the smaller islands have mobile service, but check it before you rely on it. Alderney, Sark and Herm belong to the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and Guernsey’s regulator, the GCRA, says the Bailiwick’s mobile operators serve Sark and Herm and publishes 4G coverage test maps for Guernsey, Herm, Alderney and Sark.
The MoreSim catalog lists Guernsey, not the smaller islands separately, so whether a plan connects on Sark or Herm depends on its partner network. Download offline maps and boat timetables before you leave St Peter Port.
How to set up your phone before you travel
Set up both lines at home, before the ferry or flight:
- Check your network’s zone list and daily fee for Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man in its app or price guide.
- If you’re taking a travel eSIM, check compatibility in @moresim_bot, buy the plan and install the profile at home over Wi-Fi.
- On the travel eSIM line, turn on data roaming: most travel eSIMs run on a local carrier’s network as roaming, so without it you won’t get data. If your plan’s instructions say otherwise, follow them.
- Turn off mobile data on your home SIM so data doesn’t go through your home carrier. Keep the line itself on if you’re expecting bank texts: that needs roaming enabled with your carrier.
- For the ferry crossing, switch to airplane mode with Wi-Fi and turn mobile data back on once you see a land network.
- Download offline maps of the islands and save tickets and bookings as screenshots.
Step-by-step screens for iPhone and Android are in our install guide. If something doesn’t connect, contact MoreSim support with /support in the bot, a ticket in your account or by email.
FAQ
Does EE charge for roaming in Jersey?
Yes, on most current plans. EE’s price guide, applicable from September 3, 2026, puts Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man in its EU zone, with a daily charge to use your UK allowance on handset and SIM plans launched from July 7, 2021, or a multi-day EU pass instead. EE plans launched before that date roam there at no extra cost.
Is the Isle of Man included in O2 roaming?
Yes. As of October 2026, O2 lists the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey in its Europe Zone, where you use your UK minutes, texts and data at no extra cost. If your UK data allowance is over 25GB, O2’s 25GB roaming limit applies there.
Does Vodafone charge for roaming in Jersey?
It depends on your plan. As of October 2026, Vodafone puts Jersey and Guernsey in Zone B, which costs a daily fee on pay monthly plans bought since August 11, 2021, unless the plan includes Euro Roam. The Isle of Man is in Vodafone’s Zone A, which is included in all its pay monthly plans.
Does SMARTY work in the Isle of Man?
Yes, but not as part of its EU roaming. As of October 2026, SMARTY’s EU list doesn’t include the Isle of Man, Jersey or Guernsey, and data, calls and texts there won’t work unless you have “Out of plan” add-ons in your account. A travel eSIM is an alternative for mobile data.
Do roaming charges apply in Guernsey on giffgaff?
Yes. giffgaff’s help page, updated September 30, 2026, says Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man are not included in its EU roaming allowance and are charged from your credit at its UK non-EU rates. A credit spend cap keeps that bill under control.
Will my phone work on the ferry to Guernsey?
Near the islands, France and the English coast, a phone usually stays on land networks. Mid-crossing it may find only the ship’s own maritime network, which your home network bills separately and travel eSIMs don’t cover, so keep mobile data off until a land network shows up again.
Is calling a Jersey number from the UK included in my minutes?
Not always. EE’s price guide says calls from the UK to Channel Islands and Isle of Man numbers are charged as calls to its EU roaming zone, even though the numbers look like UK ones, and Vodafone has a separate international rate for them. Check your network’s international rates before you call an island hotel.
