The easiest way for a visitor to get mobile data in Bulgaria is a travel eSIM installed at home, or a local SIM card registered with your ID. On the Black Sea coast and in Sofia and Plovdiv the network is solid, while in the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountains the signal drops on trails and in gorges. Bulgaria is in the EU and pairs easily with Greece, but check your plan separately for Turkey and Serbia.

How good is mobile data in Sofia and Plovdiv?

Mobile data in Sofia covers the center, residential districts, the metro and the airport. Bulgaria’s main carriers — A1, Yettel and Vivacom — run 4G and 5G networks, and a travel eSIM connects to one of them as a partner network. Which network you get depends on your plan and phone model.

Coverage is solid in the centers of Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and other cities too. Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic, so for most visitors a translation app with camera mode is a real help — on top of the usual maps, taxis, bookings and intercity bus timetables.

Is there good signal on the Black Sea coast: Varna, Sunny Beach, Nessebar?

Mobile data usually works in Bulgaria’s Black Sea resorts, but the network is under heavy load in summer. In Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Golden Sands, data on the evening promenade can be slower than during the day. Hotel Wi-Fi in large resorts is often stronger in the lobby than in the far wings.

Is there signal in Bulgaria’s mountains: Rila, Pirin, the Rhodopes?

Coverage in the Bulgarian mountains is good in resorts and villages and weak on the trails. Rila Monastery, the Seven Rila Lakes, the Pirin range above Bansko and the gorges of the Rhodopes are all places where the signal can vanish for a long time. In winter, the ski resorts have signal at the lifts, but there may be none on the other side of a ridge.

Local SIM card or eSIM in Bulgaria?

Local SIM cards in Bulgaria are registered with an ID document, which for a tourist means a passport: subscribers are registered at the point of sale. Cards are sold in carrier stores in cities and at airports, and the process can vary, so check it before your trip. A Bulgarian number comes in handy for long stays or if you’re buying property.

A travel eSIM skips local registration. With MoreSim you buy on the website or in the Telegram bot @moresim_bot, pay with Telegram Stars from any country, right in the bot (bank card and SBP payments currently work with cards issued in Russia), and the QR code arrives in the chat in about 30 seconds. The eSIM works as a second line, and your home SIM stays in the phone. MoreSim plans are mobile data only, with no phone number; the Bulgaria page in the catalog shows the data and duration on offer.

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM — the bot does this automatically.
  2. Buy a Bulgaria or regional plan and install the profile at home over Wi-Fi.
  3. After landing in Varna, Burgas or Sofia, set the eSIM as your mobile data line.
  4. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM: most travel eSIMs connect to the local carrier’s network as a roaming SIM, and without it you won’t get data. Turn off mobile data on your home SIM.
  5. If no network shows up, toggle airplane mode or pick a carrier manually.

Is Bulgaria included in a Europe eSIM plan?

Bulgaria is an EU member, and European regional plans usually include it. For the exact country list of the MoreSim Europe plan, check the plan card in the catalog or in the bot: every plan has its own list, and lists change. Check every country on your route, not just Bulgaria.

The EU “roam like at home” rule applies to SIM cards from EU carriers: a local Bulgarian SIM in Greece or Romania usually works on home terms, subject to fair-use limits — check the details with the carrier. The current EU roaming regulation runs until June 30, 2032. Turkey, Serbia and North Macedonia aren’t in the EU, and the rule doesn’t apply there.

How to stay connected traveling from Bulgaria to Greece, Turkey or Romania

You’ll keep mobile data on the way from Bulgaria to its neighbors as long as every country on your route is on your plan: after the border, your phone switches to the neighboring country’s network. Greece and Turkey are easy to reach by bus or car, and Romania across the bridge over the Danube. There are trains to neighboring countries too, but they run less often and more slowly, so check the current timetable before you go.

RouteCountries to check on your plan
Sofia — ThessalonikiBulgaria, Greece
Burgas — IstanbulBulgaria, Turkey (not in the EU, check separately)
Varna — BucharestBulgaria, Romania
Sofia — Belgrade or SkopjeBulgaria, Serbia or North Macedonia (not in the EU)

If a country on your route isn’t in your plan, install a separate plan for it at home as a second profile. There’s no need to delete the first eSIM: your phone can store several profiles.

How much data do I need in Bulgaria?

A beach vacation on the Bulgarian coast doesn’t take much data: maps, messaging, taxis and finding restaurants. Usage climbs with videos, beach stories and video calls home. On a ski week, more goes on photos and clips from the slopes.

For a detailed breakdown, see “How much data do you need for a trip.” If your eSIM won’t connect, MoreSim support is reachable via /support in the bot, a ticket in your account and email.

FAQ

What is mobile internet like in Bulgaria?

In Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and the Black Sea resorts, mobile data usually works well. In the mountains — Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes — there’s coverage in resorts and villages, but it weakens on trails and in gorges. For maps, taxis and messaging, the network in tourist areas is more than enough.

Is there mobile data in Sunny Beach and Nessebar?

In Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol, Golden Sands and Varna, mobile data is usually available in season, but the network can get congested on beaches and in evening crowds. Hotel Wi-Fi is often weaker in the far rooms than in the lobby. On boat trips far from shore, the signal fades.

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Bulgaria?

Yes. SIM cards in Bulgaria are registered with an ID document, which for a tourist means a passport. The process can differ between carriers, so check it before your trip. A travel eSIM is installed at home and needs no local registration.

Is Bulgaria included in a Europe eSIM plan?

Bulgaria is an EU member and is usually included in European regional plans, but every plan has its own country list. Check Bulgaria and the other countries on your route on the Europe plan card in the MoreSim catalog or in the @moresim_bot bot. If you’re also going to Turkey or Serbia, check those separately.

Is there cell signal in Bansko and Borovets?

In Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo, mobile data is usually available in the villages and at the lifts; on the slopes it depends on the terrain. At the top stations and behind ridges, the signal can drop out. Save the piste map and meeting points offline in advance.

How do I keep mobile data when traveling from Bulgaria to Greece or Turkey?

Check whether Greece and Turkey are on your plan’s country list, or install separate profiles for them at home. After crossing the border, your phone switches to the neighboring country’s network if your plan works there. The EU “roam like at home” rule covers Greece but not Turkey.

Can I make calls with an eSIM in Bulgaria?

MoreSim plans are mobile data only, with no phone number, so in Bulgaria you call through messaging apps where they aren’t restricted in the country. Your home SIM stays in the phone as a second line, and bank texts still reach it if your home plan allows roaming. If you need a Bulgarian number, you’ll need a local SIM registered with ID.
